The History and Practice of Modern Yoga

  • Siddhi Yoga 3473 North Booth Street Milwaukee, WI, 53212 United States (map)

This course will provide an in-depth survey of the evolving practices of yoga throughout history, culminating in the introduction and growth of yogāsana, the physical postures of yoga. Beginning in the Vedic culture of India, there has been minimal evidence of a physical practice that emanates the iconic postures we see today, but as the practitioners were faced with political and societal conflict, it began to emerge in what was new, embodied techniques. These early rituals were far from what we recognize in modern yoga, but provide illuminating insight into how we approach the practice today in Western culture.

This 6-week course will include a survey of the history of yoga, an in-depth study of the inception of yogāsana, the evolution of the physical posture in response to India's historical time periods, and a comprehensive discussion of what "traditional" yogāsana can be viewed as in Westernized Modern Yoga.

Dates and times: Saturdays, 1:30-3:00pm, April 6-May 11, 2019.

This course offers 9 CE hours in Yoga Philosophy, Lifestyle & Ethics through Yoga Alliance.

Cost: $100
