All skill levels and body types are invited, whether you live in Shorewood, Riverwest, or any of the surrounding areas of the city and beyond. This workshop isn't just about self-defense, but about feeling confident wherever you are.
John Matter worked as a sniper for several elite counter terrorism units for 14 years conducting over 100 uncompromised missions in countries including Somalia, Yemen, Korsavo, Macedonia, Afghanistan, and Iraq. He is a decorated warrior earning awards for displaying valor in combat. He also received 3 Purple Heart medals in his 9+ combat deployments. Because of wounds received in combat, John was forced to retire in 2011, but still works tirelessly to improve the lives of combat veterans and to train Police officers and civilians on how to properly protect themselves. He is a volunteer and speaker for several military non-profits including the American Legion and the Homeless Veterans Initiative and is a retired professional MMA fighter, a black belt in American Kickboxing, Kempo, and Brazilian Jiu Jitsu.
John is the owner of Applied Tactical Training Academy, which is responsible for the development and training of Police and foreign military non-typical warfare (SWAT and counter terrorism), and teaches situational awareness and self-defense classes, including the development of the Girl Scouts of America’s self-defense program.
John currently lives in Lisbon, Wisconsin with his wife of 13 years, who is an administrator at Menominee Falls High School, and his 3 sons Maximus, Audie, and Ronin and his daughter, Eloise.
